With little fanfare the Barak Obama campaign has followed the Edwards and Hillary campaign in launching a multi-facited mobile campaign. Obama supporters were emailed about the announcement with an emphasis on taking Obama’s “movement for change” “offline.” And by “offline” they meant your cell phone. Supporters can join by either texting the word “GO” to the short code 62262 (OBAMA) or signing on via the mobile registration API on the website.
The campaign is the first to utilize its own Shortcode (OBAMA/62262). The Edwards and Hillary campaign both utilize a shared shortcode that is used for other non-profit or commercial campaigns, though apparently the Clinton campaign is rumored to be working on getting its own.
While it’s too early to comment on the quality of the campaign, the Obama people are showing a little ingenuity here in a number of ways.

I’m incredibly psyched about Obama Mobile, particularly because it intersects with the text-messaging-related technology my company, LocaModa, is launching right now. Wiffiti 3.0, as it’s called, allows users to interact with “screens” (either displayed on flat panels in public places or as live feeds on websites). The screens can be used for giant chat boards, polls, even games. They can be displayed on any website using a simple embed code, and have been used in ADL and National Technology Network conferences and on high-profile blogs like TechCrunch.
Wouldn’t it be cool if there were a live screen at a candidates rally which was simultaneously displayed on that candidate’s AND all his or her supporters’ blogs? This would bridge the real and the digital, connecting all of our supporters in a giant conversation, regardless of their locations. Designing and posting a screen online is free, btw, and messaging one costs the same as sending a standard txt.
Here’s what a screen for Obama might look like, for instance: http://www.wiffiti.com/screen/?id=88363bfd-4b13-4e45-abf6-4e50e92a8470
If you happen to support Obama, go ahead and embed it on your site by clicking on the link in the lower left of that page. If you support somebody else, that’s great too – you can make your favorite candidate a screen by going to Wiffiti.com.
And here’s one that could go on MoPocket:

If you like it, please embed it and see what happens.
email me at nLeon@Locamoda.com to ask about this, or to tell me you’ve embedded a screen on your site!

Check out this open site for political ring tones. Don’t wait for it to come from a politician’s campaign, why not create your own…
