My Thoughts On Mobile Amnesty Donations

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Blogimages Image Psionandy Amnesty-1 The UK arm of Amnesty International has decided to try another route by recently launching a digital wallet service to allow you to donate to them via your mobile phone. Instead of sending a text message to a premium sms number (short code) you’ll be able to use PayPal rival LUUP to donate directly to them. Apparently the lower costs of doing things this way will let them gain an extra 15% on donations.

The first Amnesty International campaign where it will be possible to donate using LUUP will be related to a crisis campaign highlighting atrocities perpetrated against the people of Darfur. Launched today, this campaign will focus on the abuse of women’s rights in Darfur where rapes perpetrated by the state backed militia, the Janjawid, are a daily occurrence. Donations to the campaign will help Amnesty International to lobby the United Nations and the government of Sudan to deliver an effective peace-keeping force in the region as soon as possible.

Of course, the topic of using s Paypal Mobile like services to donate to organizations like Amnesty have come up in many a mobile fundraising discussion.

Mobile Web Americas Expo - October 2-4th 2007, Orlando Florida

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Mobile web surfing outpaces PC surfing in many areas of the world and is quickly becoming the dominant platform in many markets. The United States, it is estimated, is between 1 1/2 to 2 years behind Japan, where 40% of the adult population surf the mobile internet. Many studies have shown that Americans are more than ready for the mobile internet, but the experience is too difficult for the average user, websites are poorly designed for interaction and there are security concerns for commercial transactions.

The Mobile Web Americas conference and expo will bring together industry professionals from around the world to discuss how to improve and capitalize on the mobile web. Tackling issues like one web vs. .mobi, age verification/child protection, web design, maximizing mobile retail and commercial opportunities, overcoming security issues, monetizing infotainment services, billing for services, carrier content guidelines, handset technologies and much, much more.

A Few Insights on Mobile Marketing

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

“We believe that mobile marketing is one of the few instances in which the current hype actually underestimates the full potential of the market opportunity,” says Scott Ellison, vice president of Wireless and Mobile Communications at IDC. “The winners will be those players who fully leverage the mobile ecosystem rather than try to simply translate other marketing and advertising business models to mobile.”

Ellison hit the nail on the head with that one. Mobile is unique to mobile. What works well on the Internet will not always work well on the phone. (Case and point: compare selling email addresses and selling mobile phone numbers). And all too often I see mobile marketing companies providing cookie cutter campaigns to all of their clients. These mobile solutions miss needed individuality and take advantage of the mobile device without considering the personal relationship people have with their phones. They also seldom provide users with anything useful or motivational to act favourably on a brand (Example: Ford’s Mobile Campaign is Boring).

IDC also confirms the link between mobile marketing and relevancy based on users’ mobile search patterns and profiles. “If done right, mobile marketing provides an unparalleled window into the lives of mobile users such as their search, discovery and sharing of content,” the report concludes.

To read more on mobile marketing dos and don’ts check out the IDC study, U.S. Mobile Marketing and Advertising 2007-2011 Forecast: The Potential Actually Exceeds the Hype. (enpocket might learn a thing or two from this paper).

Ford’s Mobile Campaign is Boring

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

iMedia Connection has reported the launch of a mobile campaign for the new Ford Edge.

The Enpocket platform allows users to sign up for text alerts, download Ford Edge wallpapers and play a Ford Edge video. The campaign will also hit the street with newspapers and billboards promoting the mobile site with a “short code,” which when texted sends the link to the Ford site.

The site can be viewed by entering www.enpocket.ford.com into a mobile browser.

Meh, I am less than impressed. This campaign is a boring cookie cutter answer to adding a mobile marketing campaign. Honestly, I think it’s being set up to fail. I mean, what’s in it for the user? What will drive customers to sign-up for this?

Off the top of my head, here are a few ideas they could add to their mobile marketing campaign that would make it better for the customer: sign-up via your mobile phone to test drive a car, find out where the nearest dealership is, download a free driving game, be able to moblog comments and experiences with the car, send in user generated photos and videos of the car, contest to win a free one, and finally, maybe just a price break or certain sale days for those involved with the mobile campaign would make it worth while for customers to sign up.
